Hoi An Part 2
We spent a couple of hours in Hoi An walking around looking at the people and the shops and then we moved on to the marble market. There is a mountain they call Marble Mountain which was limestone centuries ago but has now turned to marble and many Vietnamese artisans make their living carving exquisite marble statues and figures. A charming little lady invited Ed to give her a hand with sanding her statue; as you can see, he took his work very seriously.
The final stop on our tour was China Beach, where the American GI’s went for a bit of R&R during what the Vietnamese refer to as “The American War”. It was right across the road from the Army Base so it didn’t seem to me that they were really getting away from it all, but it was a very nice beach. Many of the men on our ship were in Vietnam during the 60’s and 70’s and really have had a hard time with our visit here, and especially resent hearing the war being referred to as “The American War”. I included a picture of our friends, Dick and Debra, on China Beach.
